The Deity of Christ

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

On Sunday, September 26, 2010 I preached a message on the critical importance of the deity of Christ. It, along with the doctrine of the trinity, make up the two main pillars of the Christian faith. Without them, there is no Christianity!

Wayne Grudem  in his book, Systematic Theology wrote, “Christianity stands or falls with the confession of the Trinity and the deity of Christ. They are the heart of the Christian faith… If Jesus is not fully God, we have no salvation and ultimately no Christianity.”

The doctrine of the Trinity states that God eternally exists as three Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and each Person is fully God and there is only one God. The doctrine of the deity of Christ affirms that Jesus is fully and eternally God. He was not created. He became a man through the virgin birth and will forever be 100% God and 100% man.

John wrote his Gospel, in large part, to demonstrate that Jesus was not only human, he was divine.

John 1:1-2 and 14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Putting those verses together: “In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God and Jesus was God. He was with God in the beginning.”

Here are three other accounts in the Gospel of John that show that Jesus was God:

John 8:48-59 – Jesus claimed to be the God (I AM) who spoke to Moses at the burning bust in Exodus 3!

John 10:22-33 – The Jews accused Jesus of claiming to be God and Jesus did not refute them.

John 20:24-29 – After Thomas was convinced that Jesus was truly alive following the crucifixion, he affirmed that Jesus was his “Lord and God” and Jesus did not correct him, he affirmed his statement.

As C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity, “Either this man (Jesus) was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and god. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

I agree with the doctrinal statement of the National Association of Evangelicals, which is made up of 40 different denominations with 45,000 churches: “We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Do you?

Life is fragile

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Tragedy has come to River Oaks. Within a 24-hour time span we learned of three deaths in our church family and two were young ladies only a few years out of high school. By Friday night this week we will have conducted three funerals. My heart goes out to the families. They are experiencing some of the most gut-wrenching circumstances that life can offer. Please remember to pray for the Murphy, Lynch and Hawn families as they make their way through the valley of death that God’s presence would be felt in ways they have never felt before and that His sustaining grace will be sufficient for them.

Let me add:

  • If you are married, spend a little extra time with your spouse this week and make sure you let him/her know that you are in love with them.
  • If you have children, give them a hug, send an e-mail, instant message or twitter to them letting them know that you love them.
  • Ditto if you have parents who are still living.

James reminds us in James 4:14, “You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” We never know how much more time we have or those around us have. Live this week like life is fragile and precious, because it is.

I will be with you

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

These are the verses I used in my message today that speaks of God’s presence with us. If you, like Joseph, are experiencing a dark, fearful or discouraging season of life, read these verses every day this week and draw strength, courage and confidence from them.

Psalm 139:7-10 “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me; your right hand will hold me fast.”

Psalm 46:1-3, 7, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging…The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob in our fortress.”

Psalm 23:4, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you…”

Hebrews 13:5, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Matthew 1:23, “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.”

“‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”

I’m so glad I learned to trust Him, Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;

And I know that He is with me, will be with me to the end.

Enjoy!

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

In my morning devotional time this week I have been reading in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes. This book was written by King Solomon towards the end of his life. Admittedly, this book could almost be subtitled, “How not to live life” as Solomon looked back on his life and wrote this book with some serious regret. However, as I read his words this week, I was struck by how often the word, “enjoy” came up. So I compiled a list of verses where he encouraged his readers to enjoy life. Here they are…

2:24-25, “So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him?

3:12-13, “So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.”

3:22, “So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is why we are here! No one will bring us back from death to enjoy life after we die.”

5:18-20, “Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.”

6:9, “Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind.”

7:14, “Enjoy prosperity while you can, but when hard times strike, realize that both come from God.”

8:15, “So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life.”

9:9, “Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun…”

11:9-10, “Young people, it’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it. Do everything you want to do; take it all in. But remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do. So refuse to worry, and keep your body healthy.”

Don’t let this day pass without enjoying something or someone in your life! Life is a gift from God and it was meant to be enjoyed…today!

Burn the Koran?

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

As I’m sure most of you know by now, a congregation in Florida plans to burn copies of the Koran this weekend. It has created a firestorm of criticism from around the world, including our top political and military leaders. In an article I read this morning, Pastor Terry Jones was quoted as saying that his congregation would pray about whether or not to go through with burning Korans on Saturday. Therefore, I strongly urge you to join his congregation in prayer, asking God to change their minds. This is not the way Jesus would have us respond to the Muslim world. They need to see and experience our love, not our hate. Love prevails!

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. One the contrary: If you enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” – Romans 12:17-21

Please take time soon to pause and ask God to intervene in Jones’ heart and act in a manner fitting of a follower of Jesus Christ!

A rainbow!

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Sunday I challenged the River Oaks family to look for characteristics of God in nature (my message was on the theme of creation from Genesis 1). This morning during my morning walk I saw a rainbow! The incredible thing was that it hadn’t rained where I was, but there was a rainbow in the sky!

I was immediately reminded of one of God’s oldest promises to mankind from Genesis 9 that he would never again destroy the earth with a flood. What a reminder of the faithfulness and trustworthiness of God. It was a great moment with the Creator. I hope you have one this week too.

Wayne Grudem speaking on Creation

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Wayne Grudem is a professor of Bible and Theology at Phoenix Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona. I am giving you the link to a site where you can listen or download four lectures by Dr. Grudem on the subject of creation. He speaks on the topics of how God created, how long it took him to create and creationism verses evolution. I think you will find his lectures both interesting and informative.

New fall series at River Oaks

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

This Sunday I will begin my fall teaching series, Great Statements of the Bible. Of all the verses in the Bible,  and there are 41,173 of them, I have selected a handful that I consider vital to understanding the nature of God, the core doctrines of the Christian faith and the essential attributes of a Christian. I am truly looking forward to this series and I hope that we are all challenged, encouraged, and motivated to live a life as a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.
